Very hikeable
With the mountain range Steinernes Meer right on the doorstep and the grassy mountains behind you, hiking fans definitely have almost never ending possibilities of hiking destinations …
This entry is dedicated to the mountain Selbhorn. You can choose either the direct way, namely take the via ferrata to get upside or, as a beginning, you decide to walk up to the alpine hut Lechneralm, which is anyway located on the way to Selbhorn.
Herzogsteig
In 2014 Herzogsteig was changed into a modern via ferrata with many parts still identical to the old Herzogsteig. Steel cables and ropes replace the old “Steinmänner”, stone piles that help you orientating yourself, and show you the direction through the southern wall of Selbhorn. The most challenging parts are C/D. The most difficult part is shortly before the exit – here you need to have climbing experience and you should be able to ration your personal power.
Lechneralm
When you choose the way to Lechneralm your hiking tour is definitely easier and more comfortable and you have a good view on the shapely pyramid of Selbhorn. It feels as if you can cheer on the climbers while they are on Herzogsteig. The hiking tour to Lechneralm is a wonderful experience for all hikers. This tour starts in the centre of Maria Alm and finishes after about 450 metres in altitude. After 2 and a half hours you reach Lechneralm and you look forward to friendly people and delicious and regional delicacies.
TIP: Descend to Hinterthal and go back to Maria Alm by the hiking bus for free.
