El Tourado – ski touring with INTERSPORT Maria Alm
The next winter is just around the corner and therefore it’s time to present you two ski touring tips. These two tips are definitely dream ski tours, between grassy mountains and steep flanks around the Hochkönig.
To cut a long story short, dream tours, real insider tips. So don’t tell anybody!
TIPP: POWDERDREAMS ON BRUNNKOPF AND SCHWALBENWAND
The ski tour to the Brunnkopf is very popular among insiders, since you find powder snow on the north side for quite a long time. We start our tour at the car park Jetzbachgraben and follow the ascent track low into the valley. Over the meadows, the tour gets higher and steeper through the wood and we reach the so-called “Hoferplattl”. The tour gets demanding again, up to the summit area, from where we have a wonderful pano-
rama view. It takes about 45 minutes more to reach the Schwalbenwand. For our downhill run we choose one of the several northern
slopes and we look forward to feeling the marvellous powder snow.
TIPP: SUNNY SIDE UP – ON TOUR TO TAGHAUBENSCHARTE
Most important accessory: sun blocker. The tour to Taghaubenscharte is a very sunny tour, and when there is firn snow all around, the whole tour gets even more attractive. When the mountains are full of fresh powder snow, we start our tour very early so that we can still feel the powder
snow under our skis, when we start our downhill run. The tour leads over Erichhütte, at the beginning gently rising and it gets steeper and steeper in the cirque towards Taghaubenscharte. It takes about two hours to reach the col, and up there, we are surrounded by the impressive steep slopes of the Hochkönig. We are experts in timing and enjoy a downhill run in perfect firn snow!

Hans Seifert, manager at INTERSPORT Maria Alm and ski passionate tourer
No one is a born master in ski touring. Longstanding experience and many little steps were the secrets of the mountaineering legends when they reached the summits of the highest mountains on this planet. Physical fitness and perfect techniques are the fundamental requirements for conquering the summit. Those who climb the mountains don’t need to go to the gym. The mountains and the way up are weight room enough and those who do regularly ski tours mostly don’t need extra weight or endurance training. As long as there is enough motivation, you get stronger and better every step you take with your touring skis. That’s what several professional ski mountaineers confirm to us. They hardly spend any time in gyms. However, they are in top form. Our strategy: up the mountains and down with the pulse.
GET YOUR KICK-TURN
Those who want to explore wintery mountains safely and efficiently with their skis, need a perfect kick-turn technique. A kick-turn is important because you save energy, you stay in the track and you are safer, in general. In short, at the end of a crossing you need to search for a safe stand, relocate the uphill ski, shift your weight and relocate the poles, rearrange the downhill ski beside the uphill ski. Those who are able to do this move, are more likely to reach the summit without losing their grip.
EAT AND DRINK – IT TASTES BETTER ON A MOUNTAIN
When it comes to mountaineering, regular nutrition consumption is the secret recipe for success. When you need a lot of energy, it’s important that you supply your body with energy. Carbohydrates and protein will give you the necessary energy. The fructose that you get when eating a banana pushes your energy balance. Muesli and energy bars are great when you’re in the mountains. Drinking is extremely important when you want to do a ski tour. Warm tea is a perfect option on cold winter days for body and soul.
