Freestyler

The region around Maria Alm is a wonderland for free-ride fans. Especially around Aberg, high above Maria Alm, you find numerous powder-runs and free-ride lines. Just take a look beyond your nose or book a guided free-ride tour.

Our local heroes of the Ski School Maria Alm show you a few secret lines which you can explore on your own. For special free-ride adventures or free-ride tours, which take you deeper in the mountain region we recommend you our partner, the Alpine School Maria Alm Markus Hirnböck.

TIP: VIA HATZALM

A great run. We take the route via Hatzalm in the early hours when the shadow still lies over the mountainside in the west. When all other skiers take the “easy lines” in the skiing area, we decide to take the route at the mountain station Langegg westwards and enjoy the wide mountainsides over Hatzalm. The 4 km long way back via the flat forestry trail is waiting for you, exhausting but it is definitely worth taking it.

TIP: HANDLER GRUND

We start this run early in the morning. This powder-day also starts at Langegg, however, in a more eastern exposition in the so-called Handlergraben and leads back to the valley station Schwarzeckbahn. Safety first – we go further one after the other skier because we have to be careful with the cornice and the steep mountainsides at the entrance. However, what follows is a heart-warming moment, which brings tears of joy to our eyes: powder everywhere and the morning sun completes this wonderful scenery!

A TIP from the expert:

“Do you fancy powder snow at its finest? Then you are definitely right in Maria Alm am Hochkönig. Our region is known for its fantastic snow conditions. So if your weather forecast tells you something about orographic lifting and snow (or the so-called “Nordstau”) then get into your car and drive off – my guides and I, we are already waiting for you. At Intersport Maria Alm you get everything you need for long a“powder-days”. Where do we find the best powder? Well, that’s my secret, but join me and I will show you …”
